ICONS OF NEW KHITAN: The Khitan were a nomadic people who, from the 4th century on, inhabited a great swath of western Asia along the silk road. Their name is the root for the Russian word for China, Китай as well as the English word for the mythic Cathay. Long before Khitai ruled the steppes, cultural dominance cycled between East and West along the trade routes. The current mass revitalization of the silk road’s infrastructure reflects a shifting of cultural power to the East. The iconic imagery in this body of work explores the idea that our era’s current chaos, while threatening stability, also has the potential to provide a redemptive rebalance of power towards nature and the feminine.
